Listen for whether the speaker gives an example, explains the same idea or makes a detail more exact. For example and for instance illustrate a wider point. These phrases may have pauses around them, which can help you hear their boundaries. Keep the exact phrase even if another linker has a similar meaning. Then capture the clarification itself: it is part of the sentence, not an optional extra.
