Comparatives Mixed Practice (Advanced) Exercises

B1-B2 Level

This advanced practice combines all comparative structures: -er/more + than, as...as, the more...the more, and degree modifiers (much, far, slightly, a bit). At B1-B2 level, you need to choose the right structure for each context — a simple comparison ("taller than"), an equal comparison ("as tall as"), a proportional relationship ("the taller, the more confident"), or a modified comparison ("much taller"). The ability to switch between these forms flexibly shows strong grammatical range.

Pay attention to structures that express the same idea differently: "She is more experienced than him" = "He isn't as experienced as her" = "He is less experienced than her." All three are correct and mean the same thing, but each emphasises a different subject. Advanced-level examinations test whether you can use multiple comparative structures naturally. In Cambridge B2 First writing tasks, using three or four different comparative forms in one essay demonstrates the grammatical variety examiners look for. This exercise helps you practise switching between structures confidently.
