Conditional Questions — Gap Fill Practice
B1-B2 Level
Forming questions in conditional sentences requires changing the word order
in the result clause while keeping the if-clause unchanged. In first conditional: "If I pass
the exam, will I get a certificate?" In second conditional: "If you could live anywhere, where
would you live?" In third conditional: "If you had known the truth, what would you have done?"
The if-clause always stays in statement order — only the main clause becomes a question.
Conditional questions are extremely common in spoken English, especially for making polite requests, asking for advice, and exploring hypothetical situations. "What would you do if you won the lottery?" is one of the most popular conversation questions in English. At B1-B2 level, you need to handle conditional questions in all four types confidently. This exercise practises the correct verb forms and word order for conditional questions, which appear regularly in Cambridge B2 First speaking Part 4 and in IELTS Speaking Part 3, where examiners ask hypothetical questions to test your range of grammar.
