Cause and Effect: Therefore, So, Consequently, As a Result
B2 Level
Therefore, so, consequently, and as
a result all introduce a result or effect — they tell you what happened
because of something. While "because" and "since" give reasons, these connectors give
results: "It rained heavily. Therefore, the match was cancelled." They answer the question
"what happened next?" rather than "why?" Each connector has a different level of formality,
from casual "so" to very formal "consequently."
So is the most common and most informal — it is perfect for everyday speech and casual writing: "I was hungry, so I made a sandwich." Therefore is formal and appears in academic writing, reports, and professional communication: "The data was insufficient. Therefore, further research is needed." Consequently and as a result are also formal and emphasise that one event directly caused another: "The factory closed. Consequently, hundreds of workers lost their jobs." Learning to use a range of result connectors — from informal "so" to formal "consequently" — improves your writing for Cambridge B2 First and IELTS examinations.
