Linking Words Review Test
B1-B2 Level
This review test covers all the main linking word categories at B1-B2 level: contrast
(although, despite, however, but, yet), cause and reason (because, since, as,
because of), result and effect (so, therefore, consequently, as a result),
addition (also, too, moreover, in addition), and purpose (to, in order to,
so that). Each question tests both your understanding of the logical relationship and your
knowledge of the grammar that follows each connector.
This is a diagnostic test — pay close attention to which questions you find difficult, as they show the areas where you need more practice. Common trouble spots include: confusing "although" (+ clause) with "despite" (+ noun/-ing), using "however" with a comma instead of a full stop, and forgetting that "because of" needs a noun rather than a clause. If you score below seventy per cent, review the individual exercises for your weak areas before trying again. Achieving a high score on this test shows you are ready for the more advanced connector exercises and well prepared for Cambridge B2 First writing and Use of English tasks.
