Mixed Advanced Linking Words Practice
B2-C1 Level
This advanced exercise combines contrast, cause-effect, addition, and purpose connectors at
B2-C1 level. You need to select the correct connector from more nuanced options:
although vs despite vs however (contrast),
so vs therefore vs consequently (result),
moreover vs furthermore (addition), and to
vs so that (purpose). The challenge is not only choosing the right meaning
but also the right grammar and register for each context.
At this level, you should be able to transform sentences between different connector types — for example, rewriting "Although it was raining, we went out" as "Despite the rain, we went out" or "It was raining. However, we went out." This transformation skill shows that you understand both the meaning and the grammar of each connector. It is one of the most valuable skills for IELTS Writing Task 2 and Cambridge C1 Advanced Use of English, where marks are awarded for range and accuracy. Practising mixed exercises helps you develop the automatic ability to choose the best connector for every situation.
