Mixed Conditionals Type 1 — Past to Present
B2-C1 Level
Mixed conditionals type 1 combine a third conditional if-clause
(past perfect) with a second conditional result (would + base verb). This structure
expresses how a past action affects the present situation: "If I had studied medicine, I would
be a doctor now." The past action (studying medicine — which did not happen) has a present
consequence (not being a doctor now). This "past cause, present result" pattern is one of the
most useful advanced structures in English.
Mixed conditionals type 1 are common when expressing regret about how past decisions have shaped the present: "If she hadn't moved abroad, she would still live here." They also appear in professional contexts: "If we had hired more staff last year, we wouldn't be so busy now." The key to forming them correctly is matching the time frames: past perfect in the if-clause (the past event) and "would" + base verb in the result (the present consequence). This structure is tested in Cambridge B2 First and C1 Advanced key word transformations and is expected in IELTS Writing Task 2 when discussing the consequences of past actions.
