Mixed Conditionals Type 3 — Past to Future
B2-C1 Level
Mixed conditionals type 3 connect a past event to a future consequence,
combining a third conditional if-clause (past perfect) with a future-oriented result
using "would" plus a future expression. For example: "If I had booked the tickets last week,
we would be going to the concert tomorrow." The past decision (not booking) affects a future
plan (not going tomorrow). This is the rarest type of mixed conditional but appears in advanced
exam materials and formal writing.
These sentences are useful when past decisions have clear consequences for upcoming events: "If she had applied earlier, she would be starting the course next month." "If we had left on time, we would arrive before dark." The result clause often includes future time markers like "tomorrow," "next week," "soon," or "by the time." Continuous forms are also common in the result: "would be doing" emphasises an ongoing future action that was affected by the past. At B2-C1 level, being able to form these connections between different time frames demonstrates the sophisticated grammar control expected in Cambridge C1 Advanced writing and IELTS band 7+ academic essays.
