Noun + FOR, TO & OF Exercises (Part 2)

B1-B2 Level

This exercise builds on the noun + for, to, and of combinations introduced in Part 1, focusing on slightly more challenging phrases. You will practise combinations such as response to, reaction to, responsibility for, fondness for, and less obvious "of" phrases like awareness of and fear of. At this level, you also need to recognise that some nouns can take more than one preposition depending on the context: "knowledge of history" (what you know) but "knowledge about history" is also used in informal English.

A frequent error at this level is confusing responsibility for with "responsibility of." The correct form is always "responsibility for" when talking about duty: "She has responsibility for the marketing budget." Similarly, learners often write "reaction of" when it should be "reaction to": "His reaction to the announcement was surprising." Paying close attention to these easily confused combinations is essential for improving your writing accuracy. These noun + preposition phrases are tested regularly in Cambridge B2 First open cloze and key word transformation tasks.
