Past Perfect Passive Voice Exercises

B1-B2 Level

The past perfect passive is formed with had been + past participle and describes an action that was completed before another past action or a specific time in the past. Unlike present tenses, there is no singular or plural variation — "had been" is used with all subjects.

For example, "The cake had been eaten before I arrived" tells us the eating happened first and the arrival happened second. "The documents had been signed by the time the meeting started" shows the signing was already complete. This tense is essential for showing the order of past events when using the passive voice. For negatives, add "not" after "had": "The letter hadn't been opened." For questions, move "had" before the subject: "Had the room been booked in advance?" The past perfect passive frequently appears in Cambridge B2 First and C1 Advanced exams, especially in sentence transformation exercises. It is also common in narratives and reports where you need to describe what had already been done before a key event took place.
