Past Continuous Background Descriptions Exercises

B1 Level

The past continuous is a powerful tool for setting the scene in stories and descriptions. Writers use it to create a vivid picture of what was happening before the main events begin: "It was a cold evening. Snow was falling softly. People were hurrying home from work." Each sentence in the past continuous adds another layer to the background, like brush strokes in a painting. This is different from the past simple, which drives the story forward with completed actions.

In narrative writing, the pattern is: past continuous for the background, then past simple for the main events: "The sun was setting and children were playing in the park. Suddenly, a dog ran across the road." This combination of tenses creates rhythm and suspense. Multiple past continuous verbs can appear together when describing a busy scene: "Waiters were serving food, guests were chatting, and music was playing." A common mistake is overusing the past simple for descriptions — "Snow fell and people hurried" loses the ongoing, atmospheric quality. Background descriptions are tested in B1 writing tasks and appear in Cambridge Preliminary and IELTS story-writing questions.

Quick Rule

scene-setting: subject + was/were + verb-ing (multiple background actions)

  • 1.The sun was shining and birds were singing in the trees. (nature scene with two parallel details)
  • 2.People were rushing through the station and announcements were echoing overhead. (busy scene)
  • 3.The guests weren't paying attention — they were all staring at their phones. (negative scene detail)
  • 4.It was late at night. Rain was pouring down and wind was howling outside. (atmospheric weather)
  • 5.She was sitting alone at a table, reading a book and drinking coffee. (character introduction)
