Past Continuous Mixed Practice (Intermediate) Exercises

B1-B2 Level

This intermediate exercise combines several advanced uses of the past continuous: interrupted actions ("I was cooking when the alarm went off"), parallel actions ("While she was reading, he was watching TV"), state verb exceptions ("I was thinking" vs "I thought"), and polite or tentative language ("I was wondering if you could help"). At this level, you need to recognise which structure is needed from the context and choose the correct tense for each verb in a sentence.

The polite use of the past continuous is often overlooked but is important for natural English. "I was wondering if you could help me" sounds more tentative and polite than "Do you want to help me?" Similarly, "I was hoping to ask you something" softens a request. This use has nothing to do with past time — it uses the continuous form to create distance and politeness. At intermediate level, the main challenge is handling sentences with two or more verbs where each verb may need a different tense. Read the full sentence before deciding which tense each verb needs. This mixed-tense decision-making is heavily tested in Cambridge B1-B2 and IELTS grammar sections.
