Past Continuous Time Expressions Exercises

A2-B1 Level

The past continuous frequently appears with specific time expressions that set the scene. The most common are: at + specific time ("at eight o'clock," "at midnight"), when ("when you called"), while ("while she was cooking"), as ("as I was leaving"), and all day / all morning / all evening ("I was working all day"). These time markers tell the listener exactly when the ongoing action was happening and are key signals that the past continuous is needed.

Understanding which time expression to use helps you choose the correct tense. "At eight o'clock" points to a specific moment, so the past continuous describes what was in progress at that moment: "At eight o'clock, I was having dinner." "While" and "as" introduce a background action and are almost always followed by the past continuous: "While I was walking home, I saw an old friend." "All day" and "all morning" emphasise duration: "She was studying all morning." Recognising these time markers is a practical exam strategy — they often appear as clues in gap-fill and multiple-choice questions at Cambridge A2-B1 level.
