Past Perfect Questions Exercises
B1 Level
To form past perfect questions, move had before the subject.
For yes/no questions: "Had you finished?" For wh-questions, put the question word
first: "What had they done?" "Where had she gone?" The past participle stays after the subject
in both types. Short answers use "Yes, I had" or "No, I hadn't" — you do not repeat the main
verb: "Had you eaten?" "Yes, I had" (not "Yes, I had eaten").
Past perfect questions are useful when you want to ask about something that happened before a specific past moment: "Had you met her before the party?" (asking about experience before that event). Negative questions add "not" after the subject or use "hadn't": "Had she not received the message?" or "Hadn't she received the message?" The contracted form sounds more natural in conversation. These question forms appear regularly in Cambridge B1 and B2 examinations, particularly in reading and listening comprehension tasks where you must identify the sequence of past events.
