Phrasal Verbs Error Correction Exercises

B2-C1 Level

Error correction exercises are one of the most effective ways to improve your understanding of phrasal verbs. Common mistakes include using the wrong particle ("I woke down" instead of "I woke up"), putting the particle in the wrong position ("She looked the children after" instead of "She looked after the children"), and confusing similar phrasal verbs ("He gave up smoking" versus "He gave in to temptation"). By identifying and correcting these errors, you develop a deeper understanding of how phrasal verbs work and avoid making the same mistakes yourself.

The most frequent error type is using the wrong particle. This happens because many phrasal verbs with different particles look similar: "turn on" (activate), "turn off" (deactivate), "turn up" (arrive or increase), "turn down" (refuse or decrease). Confusing these changes the meaning entirely. Another common error is breaking an inseparable phrasal verb: "look after" cannot become "look him after" — the correct form is "look after him." Advanced learners also struggle with three-word phrasal verbs: "I look forward to see you" is wrong — it must be "I look forward to seeing you" (gerund after "to"). Cambridge B2 and C1 exams regularly include these error types.

Quick Rule

identify wrong particle, word order, extra word, or verb form → correct the phrasal verb

  • 1.Wrong: I woke down early. → Correct: I woke up early. (wrong particle — should be up)
  • 2.Wrong: She looked the baby after. → Correct: She looked after the baby. (wrong order — inseparable verb)
  • 3.Wrong: She didn't turned off it. → Correct: She didn't turn it off. (pronoun placement in negative separable verb)
  • 4.Wrong: We ran into of problems. → Correct: We ran into problems. (extra preposition removed)
  • 5.Wrong: I look forward to see you. → Correct: I look forward to seeing you. (gerund required after to)
