Present Simple Advanced

A2 Level

At the advanced A2 level, the present simple is used in more complex sentences with time clauses and multiple parts. Time clauses begin with words like when, before, after, as soon as, until, and while. In these sentences, we use the present simple even when we talk about the future: "I'll call you when I get home" (not "when I will get"). This rule surprises many learners because the meaning is future, but the verb form is present.

Complex present simple sentences also combine different types of verbs in one sentence: "She works in a hospital and takes the train every morning." You can join ideas with "and," "but," and "or" to make longer, more natural sentences. Present simple is also used for schedules and timetables, even for future events: "The film starts at eight," "The shop closes at six." This use of present simple for fixed future events is common in everyday English and appears in exams at A2 and B1 levels. Mastering these advanced uses shows strong control of this important tense.
