Present Simple Cloze: Daily Routine

A1-A2 Level

A cloze exercise is a text with missing words that you fill in. This type of exercise is excellent for learning grammar in context because you read a complete story or description and choose the correct verb forms. In this exercise, you read about a person's daily routine and fill in present simple verbs. You must decide whether to use the basic form (I/you/we/they) or add -s/-es (he/she/it) based on the subject in each sentence.

Reading a full text helps you see how present simple works in connected writing, not just in single sentences. Pay attention to the words around each gap — the subject tells you which form to use, and time expressions like "every morning" or "at night" confirm that present simple is the right tense. This is the same skill you need for reading tests in Cambridge and IELTS exams, where cloze tasks appear at many levels. Practising with daily routine topics builds both your grammar and your everyday vocabulary at the same time.

Quick Rule

subject + base verb / verb-s (choose the correct form for the gap)

  • 1.She ___ (get) up at six every morning. → gets (third person -s)
  • 2.They ___ (not / eat) meat. → don't eat (negative with they)
  • 3.He ___ (watch) the news after dinner. → watches (third person -es)
  • 4.I ___ (have) a shower before breakfast. → have (first person — base form)
  • 5.My parents ___ (go) for a walk every evening. → go (plural — base form)
