Present Simple Questions with Do/Does

A1-A2 Level

To make a yes/no question in the present simple, put Do or Does at the beginning of the sentence, followed by the subject and the basic form of the verb. Use Do with I, you, we, and they: "Do you like pizza?" "Do they live here?" Use Does with he, she, and it: "Does she speak French?" "Does it rain a lot?" The main verb always stays in its basic form — never add -s after Does.

The most common mistake with present simple questions is keeping the -s on the verb: "Does she speaks French?" is wrong — the correct form is "Does she speak French?" Just like with "doesn't" in negatives, "Does" already shows the third person, so the verb stays simple. To answer a yes/no question, use a short answer: "Yes, I do" / "No, I don't" or "Yes, she does" / "No, she doesn't." Short answers are very common in spoken English and show good grammar. This question pattern is essential for everyday conversations and is tested in all beginner English exams.
