Present Simple WH Questions

A2 Level

WH questions ask for specific information instead of a simple yes or no answer. The question words are what, where, when, why, who, which, and how. To form a WH question in the present simple, put the question word first, then do or does, the subject, and the basic form of the verb: "Where do you live?" "What does she study?" "How do they get to work?"

There is one important exception: when who or what is the person or thing doing the action, you do not use do or does. Compare: "Who calls you?" (who = the person calling, no "do" needed) with "Who do you call?" (you = the person calling, "do" is needed). The word how can combine with other words to ask different types of questions: "How often do you exercise?" (frequency), "How long does it take?" (time), "How much does it cost?" (price). WH questions are used in every English conversation and are important for all levels of English exams.

Quick Rule

WH word + do/does + subject + base verb? | Who/What + verb-s? (subject question)

  • 1.Where do you work? (asking for a place — use do with you)
  • 2.What does she study at university? (asking for information — use does with she)
  • 3.How often do they visit their grandparents? (asking about frequency)
  • 4.Why doesn't he eat breakfast? (negative WH question — doesn't + base verb)
  • 5.Who teaches your class? (who as subject — no do/does needed)
