Question Tags with Did Exercises
A2-B1 Level
Past simple statements use did in their question tags when
there is no visible helping verb. Unlike present simple (which requires do/does
depending on the subject), past simple uses did for all subjects: I,
you, he, she, it, we, they. "You finished your homework, didn't you?"
"She went home early, didn't she?" This consistency makes past simple
tags simpler than present simple tags.
The positive-negative swap rule applies as normal. Positive past statements need "didn't": "He called you, didn't he?" Negative past statements need "did": "They didn't arrive, did they?" Note that the main verb in past simple statements shows the tense through its form (worked, went, finished), so the tag uses "did/didn't" — never the past form again. Saying "went, didn't went" would be incorrect. The past form appears only once in the statement, while the tag uses the base helping verb "did." This pattern appears constantly when asking about past events in everyday conversation.
