Question Tags with Imperatives & Let's Exercises
B1 Level
Imperatives (commands and requests) and Let's
suggestions have special question tag patterns. For suggestions with "Let's," the tag
is always shall we: "Let's go to the beach, shall we?" "Let's
have dinner together, shall we?" This applies even to negative suggestions:
"Let's not argue about this, shall we?" The tag "shall we" is fixed and does not change.
For positive imperatives (commands without "don't"), several tags are acceptable: will you, won't you, or would you. "Close the door, will you?" softens the command into a request. "Pass the salt, won't you?" sounds slightly more polite. For negative imperatives (commands with "Don't"), use will you only: "Don't forget to call me, will you?" "Don't be late, will you?" These patterns transform blunt commands into polite requests, which is essential for natural, courteous English conversation. Many learners confuse imperative tags with standard tags because imperatives have no visible subject — remembering that "will you" softens commands helps you sound polite rather than demanding.
