Question Tags with Can, Will, Should Exercises
B1 Level
Modal verbs like can, will, and should copy
directly into question tags. "You can swim, can't you?" "She will come,
won't she?" "We should leave, shouldn't we?" Because
modals are already helping verbs, you simply swap positive to
negative or negative to positive. No extra "do" or "does" is needed.
The contracted negative forms are essential to learn: can't (cannot), won't (will not), and shouldn't (should not). "He can't come tonight, can he?" (negative to positive). "They shouldn't do that, should they?" (negative to positive). Note that "won't" does not sound like "will + not" — it is an irregular contraction that learners must memorise. Modal tags are very common in everyday speech for asking about abilities (can), future events (will), and advice (should), making this an essential pattern for natural conversation. Cambridge B1 and B2 examinations frequently test this pattern because it demonstrates grammatical accuracy and natural fluency.
