Reported Speech Mixed Intermediate Exercises

B1-B2 Level

This intermediate exercise (B1-B2) combines all major reported speech transformations in a single practice session: tense backshift across every tense, questions (both WH and yes/no), commands and requests, modal verb changes, and time and place expression shifts. You will need to apply multiple rules simultaneously — for example, changing both the tense and the time expression in the same sentence.

At this level, sentences become noticeably more complex and demanding. A question like "Will you be coming to the party tomorrow?" requires you to change "will" to "would," adjust "you" to the appropriate pronoun, switch from question word order to statement order, and change "tomorrow" to "the next day" — all in one transformation. These exercises build the automatic recognition skills you need for Cambridge exams and real conversations, where you cannot stop to think about each individual rule separately. Speed and accuracy both matter at this level.

Quick Rule

Identify sentence type → Apply tense backshift → Change pronouns → Shift time/place

  • 1."I have been working all day." → She said she had been working all day.
  • 2."Where will you go tomorrow?" → He asked where I would go the next day.
  • 3."Don't forget to call me." → They reminded me not to forget to call them.
  • 4."I can't come today." → He said he couldn't come that day.
  • 5."Have you ever been to London?" → She asked if I had ever been to London.
