Is There / Are There Question Exercises

A1-A2 Level

To ask about existence, English uses Is there ...? and Are there ...?. Use Is there with singular countable nouns and uncountable nouns: "Is there a pharmacy nearby?" and "Is there any milk left?" Use Are there with plural nouns: "Are there any buses after ten?" This pattern is very common when asking about places, services, food, and objects around you. It appears in travel, classroom English, hotel English, shopping, and everyday conversation whenever you need to ask if something exists or is available in a place.

Questions often include a, an, or any inside the opening phrase. Singular countable nouns usually need a or an: "Is there a bank?" and "Is there an airport?" Plural and uncountable nouns often use any: "Are there any parks?" and "Is there any information online?" Getting these small words right is a major part of accurate beginner grammar. If learners can match the verb and article pattern to the noun correctly, they make much more natural questions in speaking and writing.
