Time Expressions Final Test

Mixed time expressions require more than recognising one rule. The sentence may test duration, starting point, completion, expectation, continuation, very recent action, or a stopped situation. Use for with a duration and since with a starting point. Use already for earlier-than-expected completion, yet for expected actions in questions or negatives, and still for continuing situations. The challenge is deciding which meaning category the sentence needs before looking at the options.

Use just when an action happened moments ago. Use no longer when a situation has stopped or changed. A mixed test often includes several clues in one sentence: a duration such as for fifteen years, a starting event such as since the station opened, or a change marker such as it was replaced. Read the whole sentence before choosing. The best answer usually matches the time relationship, not only the nearest word.
