Too / Enough Sentence Transformations

B2 Level

Sentence transformations with too and enough are a core skill for Cambridge B2 First (FCE) Key Word Transformations. The task is to rewrite a sentence so that it keeps the same meaning but uses a different structure. The most common pattern converts between "too + adjective + to + verb" and "not + opposite adjective + enough + to + verb": "The box is too heavy to lift" becomes "The box isn't light enough to lift." You must identify the opposite adjective and reverse the sentence structure.

Another frequent transformation links "so + adjective + that + clause" with "too + adjective + to + verb": "She was so tired that she couldn't concentrate" becomes "She was too tired to concentrate." When a "for + person" element is needed, include it after the adjective phrase: "The music was too loud for us to have a conversation." Practise identifying which structure the original sentence uses and which the target requires. Common adjective pairs to memorise include young/old, hot/cold, cheap/expensive, easy/difficult, fast/slow, and big/small. These appear repeatedly in B2 examinations.
