Grammar review
Decide by meaning, not by a final -s. A school subject, sport or illness such as linguistics or mumps is one thing, so its verb is singular. A noun for something with two matching parts, such as tweezers, takes a plural verb unless the subject is a pair of them. Some plural nouns have no -s at all.
