Used To - Mixed Practice (Advanced) Exercises

B2-C1 Level

This advanced practice tests all four structures in complex sentences with multiple time references, embedded clauses, and boundary cases. At this level, you may encounter sentences where two blanks require different structures: "She _______ live in Tokyo, but she still hasn't _______ to the pace of London." The first blank needs "used to" (past state), and the second needs "got used" (adaptation process). These multi-structure sentences test whether you truly understand each form's meaning.

Advanced exercises also test state verbs that are less obvious. Verbs like matter, cost, resemble, consist of, and deserve are state verbs and cannot be used with "would" for past habits. Boundary cases arise when a verb can be either state or action depending on context: "think" as opinion (state — "I used to think") vs "think" as mental activity (action — "I would think about it carefully"). Understanding these subtleties is essential for C1 Advanced candidates and demonstrates a sophisticated command of English grammar that impresses examiners.
