Used To - Mixed Practice (Intermediate) Exercises

B1-B2 Level

At the intermediate level, the context clues become more subtle, and you need to read each sentence carefully to identify the correct structure. Some sentences may have ambiguous time references — "I'm used to it" could describe current comfort, or a past context might shift the meaning to "I was used to it." The key is to analyse the full sentence, not just individual words, before choosing between used to, be used to, get used to, and would.

At this level, you should also recognise less obvious state verbs. Words like "own," "understand," "remember," and "seem" are state verbs that cannot be used with "would" for past habits. Contrast pairs become trickier too: "She didn't use to work weekends" (past — she never worked weekends) vs "She isn't used to working weekends" (present — she finds weekend work difficult). Practising with ambiguous contexts builds the analytical skills needed for Cambridge B2 First and helps you avoid mistakes under exam pressure.
