Used To - Question Forms Exercises

B1-B2 Level

Questions with used to structures follow three distinct patterns depending on the meaning. For past habits, use Did + subject + use to + base verb: "Did you use to play any sports?" asks about past habits that may have stopped. For current familiarity, use Are you used to + -ing form: "Are you used to working long hours?" asks whether someone is comfortable with their current situation. For ongoing adaptation, use Are you getting used to + -ing form: "Are you getting used to the new system?"

The key to choosing the right question form is identifying the time reference. Words like "when you were young" or "before" signal the past — use "Did...use to." Words like "now" or "these days" signal the present — use "Are you used to." Words like "yet," "still," or "gradually" signal a process — use "Are you getting used to." Notice that "Did you use to" takes a base verb (play, eat, live), while "Are you used to" takes the -ing form (playing, eating, living). This distinction is frequently tested at B1-B2 level in Cambridge examinations.
