Embedded Questions Word Order Exercises
B1-B2 Level
Embedded questions are questions inside another sentence. They often appear
after phrases such as Do you know, Can you tell me, I wonder, or
I am not sure. The important word-order rule is that the embedded part usually uses
statement order: "Do you know where the bank is?", not "Do you know where is the bank?" The
sentence may sound like a question, but the inner clause is not a direct question.
This B1-B2 practice focuses on moving from direct-question order to embedded-question order. A direct question such as "Where is the bank?" becomes "Do you know where the bank is?" A direct question such as "What time does the train leave?" becomes "Do you know what time the train leaves?" The helper verb may disappear when the embedded clause returns to statement order. This pattern is common in polite questions, reported questions, and careful writing.
