Would for Past Actions Exercises

B1 Level

Would + base verb describes repeated actions in the past — things someone did again and again: "When I was young, my grandmother would bake bread every Sunday." It creates a warm, nostalgic feeling and is common in storytelling and personal memories. The structure is simple: subject + would + base verb, with no changes for person (I would, she would, they would).

There are two important rules for using "would" this way. First, you must set a past context before using "would" — start with a phrase like "When I was a child..." or "In those days..." Without this context, "would" may sound like a conditional or hypothetical. Second, "would" only works with action verbs — things you can physically do. State verbs like "be," "have," "know," "like," and "live" cannot be used with "would" for past habits: say "I used to know her" (not "I would know her"). Mixing "used to" for the opening state and "would" for the repeated actions is the most natural style: "We used to live by the sea. Every morning, I would walk along the shore." This grammar point is commonly tested at B1 level.
