Articles Error Correction

B1 Level

This articles error correction exercise targets the mistakes learners make most often with a, an, the, and no article: using the for general nouns, forgetting articles before singular countable nouns, and choosing a or an from spelling instead of sound.

Wrong: "The students learn better when they get clear examples." Correct: "Students learn better when they get clear examples."
Wrong: "I found a umbrella in the hall. A umbrella was blue." Correct: "I found an umbrella in the hall. The umbrella was blue."

Because this page uses click-edit proofreading, you do not only remember a rule and fill a gap. You read the whole sentence, decide whether the noun is general or specific, and edit only the wrong chunk. Some sentences are already correct, so the route also trains you not to add unnecessary articles to valid phrases such as by train, go to school, or a properly introduced noun.

Quick Rule

a/an + singular countable noun | the + known or specific noun | no article + general plural or uncountable noun

  • 1.It was an honest mistake, so nobody was upset.
  • 2.Teachers need clear examples when they explain articles.
  • 3.Sam opened a small parcel. The parcel contained a birthday card.
  • 4.We usually get to the city centre by tram.
  • 5.Please send me some advice before the interview.
