Gerunds and Infinitives: Verb Patterns Contrast Practice
B1-B2 Level
This exercise contrasts verb + object + infinitive patterns with gerund-only verbs. You will
practise verbs that require an object before the infinitive: allow, encourage, force,
persuade, remind, and warn. For example, "The coach encouraged her
to train harder" and "I reminded him to lock the door."
You will also practise gerund-only verbs like keep, suggest, deny, and avoid
for contrast.
Some tricky verb pairs appear here. "Persuade" takes object + infinitive: "I persuaded her to come." "Suggest" takes a gerund: "I suggested coming earlier." "Warn" takes object + infinitive: "They warned us not to swim here." "Avoid" takes a gerund: "You should avoid swimming here." When you mix these patterns in the same conversation, accuracy shows your mastery of English verb patterns. A common mistake is saying "I suggest you to try" — this is always wrong because "suggest" never takes object + infinitive. This contrast between verb types is heavily tested in Cambridge B1 Preliminary and B2 First Use of English sections.
