Mixed prepositional phrases bring together common expressions from several categories, so you have to read for meaning rather than memorise one topic at a time. The B1 phrase set includes time phrases such as on time, at once, in time, and for the time being; manner phrases such as by accident, by mistake, by heart, and on purpose; plus linking and role phrases such as in spite of, apart from, in charge of, and in place of.

The context is deliberately clear at this level. If a sentence mentions a schedule, choose a time phrase. If it describes intention, error, memory, or luck, choose a manner phrase. If it connects two ideas, shows contrast, or describes responsibility, choose a linking or role phrase. Learning these as complete chunks is more reliable than trying to translate each preposition separately. The same preposition can appear in many phrases, but the full phrase carries the meaning. Meaning comes before preposition choice.
