Past Simple Irregular Verbs Part 2

A2 Level

This second set of irregular verbs builds on the twenty most common forms covered in Part 1. Here you will practise verbs like "speak" → "spoke," "teach" → "taught," "catch" → "caught," and "fall" → "fell." These verbs appear frequently in everyday English, especially when describing experiences, telling stories, and talking about daily routines. Knowing them well will make your speech and writing sound more natural and confident.

Some of these verbs follow patterns that can help you remember them. Verbs ending in -ought or -aught form a useful group: "teach" → "taught," "catch" → "caught," "bring" → "brought," "think" → "thought." Verbs with vowel changes also cluster: "speak" → "spoke," "break" → "broke," "choose" → "chose." Noticing these small patterns makes learning easier, even though there is no complete rule. At A2 level, focus on using each verb correctly in a full sentence rather than just memorising the past form in isolation. This active practice approach prepares you for real communication and for Cambridge A2 Key and B1 Preliminary exam tasks.
