Past Simple Was/Were Exercises

A1-A2 Level

Was and were are the past simple forms of the verb "to be." Use was with singular subjects (I, he, she, it) and were with plural subjects (we, you, they). This is one of the first past tense forms English learners study, and getting it right is essential for describing past states, locations, feelings, and identities.

The negative forms are wasn't (was not) and weren't (were not). For questions, put was/were before the subject: "Was she happy?" "Were they at home?" For negative questions: "Wasn't he at the party?" "Weren't you listening?" Was/were is also used in WH-questions about the past: "Where was the meeting?" "Why were they late?" "How was your weekend?" Mastering was/were gives you the foundation for all past tense structures, because "to be" is the most common verb in English and appears in many grammar patterns including the past continuous (was/were + -ing) and the passive voice (was/were + past participle).
