Past Simple Irregular Verbs Part 4

B1-B2 Level

This final set of irregular verbs covers advanced forms that upper-intermediate learners need for more precise and varied expression. You will practise verbs like "withdraw" → "withdrew," "undergo" → "underwent," "forbid" → "forbade," and "overcome" → "overcame." These verbs appear in formal texts, news reports, academic writing, and advanced exam materials. Mastering them moves your English from competent to confident.

Many of these advanced irregular verbs are compound forms built from simpler ones you already know: "overcome" follows the pattern of "come" → "came," "withdraw" follows "draw" → "drew," and "undertake" follows "take" → "took." Recognising these base-verb connections makes learning compound irregular verbs much easier. At B1-B2 level, these verbs are tested in Cambridge B2 First reading passages and use of English sections. They also appear in IELTS academic reading texts. Building your vocabulary of advanced irregular verbs allows you to understand more demanding texts and express complex ideas about past events with the same precision as a confident English speaker.
