Past Simple Mixed Practice — Advanced
B1-B2 Level
This advanced mixed practice exercise presents challenging sentences with
complex vocabulary, formal register, and less common irregular verb forms. You will
encounter verbs like "arise" → "arose," "seek" → "sought," "flee" → "fled," and "weave" →
"wove" in realistic contexts including news reports, formal descriptions, and academic
scenarios. The sentences are longer and may contain multiple verbs, dependent clauses,
and precise vocabulary.
At B1-B2 level, accuracy with past simple is expected even in demanding contexts. This exercise tests whether you can produce correct past forms when the surrounding language is more complex, the verbs are less familiar, and the contexts require close reading. You will need to distinguish between verbs with similar base forms but different past forms, and handle spelling changes with less common regular verbs. Successfully completing this exercise demonstrates the grammar range expected in Cambridge B2 First writing tasks, where using a variety of verb forms accurately contributes to a higher score. This is also excellent preparation for IELTS writing, where grammatical range and accuracy are key band descriptors.
