Past Simple Questions Exercise
A2-B1 Level
To form questions in the past simple, place did before the
subject, followed by the base form of the verb: "Did you see the film?"
For information questions, add a question word first: "What did you do yesterday?" or
"Where did she go last weekend?" Just like with negatives, the main verb stays in its base
form because "did" already carries the past meaning. Never say "Did you went?" — the
correct form is "Did you go?"
Short answers in past simple use "did" or "didn't" without repeating the main verb: "Did you enjoy the party?" — "Yes, I did" or "No, I didn't." This pattern is different from questions with "be," which do not use "did" at all: "Were you tired?" (not "Did you be tired?"). Learning to form past simple questions correctly is important for everyday conversation, job interviews, and language exams. Common question words used with past simple include what, where, when, who, why, how, how long, and how many.
