Past Simple vs Past Perfect Part 3 — Advanced
B2-C1 Level
This advanced exercise covers the most challenging past simple vs past perfect
patterns, including third conditional contexts ("If she had studied harder, she would have
passed"), reported speech with backshift ("He said he had finished"), and complex narratives
where multiple past perfect clauses establish a detailed backstory. At B2-C1 level, you
need to handle these patterns with confidence and precision.
Past perfect also appears in wishes about the past: "I wish I had known earlier" (but I didn't know). In formal written English, past perfect is expected whenever events are described out of chronological order and clarity is important. For example, a news report might say: "The company announced record profits. Sales had increased by 30 per cent over the previous year, and costs had fallen significantly." The past perfect clauses provide background information that explains the announcement. This level of tense control is expected in Cambridge C1 Advanced writing and in IELTS band 7+ academic writing, where grammatical accuracy and range are heavily weighted scoring criteria.
