Was/Were vs Did Part 2 — Mixed Contexts

A2-B1 Level

This second exercise builds on the basic was/were vs did distinction by introducing more complex sentence structures. You will practise choosing the correct form when sentences contain multiple clauses, time expressions, and a mix of states and actions in the same context. For example: "She was tired because she didn't sleep well" — the first clause uses "was" (describing a state) while the second uses "didn't" (describing an action). Recognising both patterns within a single sentence is a key A2-B1 skill.

At this level, you also encounter sentences where the choice is less obvious. "There was a problem" uses "was" because "there was" describes existence — a state. "The meeting didn't start on time" uses "didn't" because "start" is an action verb. Watch out for sentences with adjectives after verbs other than "be": "The food tasted good" is correct (no "did" needed here because it is not a question or negative). By practising mixed contexts, you develop the ability to switch between the two patterns naturally, which is essential for fluent conversation and for Cambridge B1 Preliminary exam success.

  • 3.Were they happy when they didn't have to work?
