Was/Were vs Did Part 4 — Advanced Patterns

B1-B2 Level

This final exercise in the was/were vs did series presents advanced sentence patterns that challenge even confident intermediate learners. You will work with embedded questions ("I asked whether she was ready"), conditional-style clauses ("If the weather wasn't good, we didn't go out"), and sentences where the correct choice depends on understanding the meaning rather than just following a mechanical rule. At this level, accuracy with these patterns shows strong grammar control.

Pay special attention to verbs that look like states but are actually actions. "He was being difficult" (past continuous of "be" — intentional behaviour, an action) vs "He was difficult" (past simple of "be" — a state, his personality). Similarly, "I didn't feel well" uses "didn't" because "feel" here is an action verb describing a physical experience, even though it describes a state-like condition. These borderline cases test your deeper understanding of English grammar. Mastering them is important for Cambridge B2 First and IELTS band 6+ performance, where grammar range and accuracy are key scoring criteria.

Quick Rule

Was/Were → "be" in all forms | Did → other verbs, even state-like ones (feel, seem, look)

  • 1.She didn't seem happy, and I wasn't sure why.
  • 2.Were you aware that the deadline didn't change?
  • 3.The results weren't what we expected — they didn't match the data.
  • 4.If the hotel wasn't available, did you try another one?
  • 5.I didn't realise that the meeting was cancelled.
