Present Continuous: Final Test

A1-B2 Level

This comprehensive test covers every major use of the present continuous tense: actions happening right now, temporary situations, future arrangements, the "always + continuous" pattern for annoying habits, and the important contrast with the present simple — including state verbs and dual-meaning verbs. The questions progress from basic A1 formation, where you choose the correct form of "be" and add -ing, through to more challenging B2 scenarios that require you to decide between the present simple and present continuous based on meaning, context, and time expressions.

To do well on this test, remember the core rules: match am/is/are to the subject, check the spelling of the -ing form (especially doubling and dropping -e), look for time expressions that signal "now" versus "always," and watch for state verbs that cannot take the continuous form. If a question includes a future time expression with a definite plan, the present continuous is likely correct. If the sentence describes a general fact or regular habit, choose the present simple. This final test is excellent preparation for the grammar sections of Cambridge A2 Key, B1 Preliminary, and B2 First examinations.
