Present Continuous: Future Arrangements Exercises
B1 Level
The present continuous is not only for "now" — it is also used to talk about
definite future arrangements. When you have made a plan with a specific time, place,
or person, you can use the present continuous: "I am meeting Sarah at six o'clock," "We are
flying to Rome on Friday." These are fixed plans — you have bought the ticket, made the booking,
or agreed with another person. The future meaning is usually clear from context because the
sentence typically includes a future time expression like tomorrow, next week,
tonight, or on Saturday.
Many learners wonder how this differs from "going to" for future plans. The key distinction is that the present continuous for the future usually involves other people or arrangements already made — diary-type events. "I'm having dinner with Tom tonight" (we agreed on the plan). "Going to" can describe personal intentions that may not involve anyone else: "I'm going to study harder next term" (your own decision). In practice, the two forms can often be used for the same situations when the plan is definite. This is a common grammar point in B1 and B2 level examinations.
