Adverb Formation Exercises

Adverb formation helps you describe how an action happens or how strong an adjective is. Many adverbs are made by adding -ly to an adjective: quick becomes quickly, and clear becomes clearly. These words often come after verbs, before adjectives, or before other adverbs. In a word formation sentence, the words around the gap tell you whether an adverb is needed.

Spelling matters. Adjectives ending in -y often change y to i before -ly, as in happy to happily. Adjectives ending in -le can change to -ly, as in gentle to gently. Some adverbs are irregular or unchanged: good becomes well, while fast and hard often stay the same. This practice builds control over both meaning and spelling in B1-B2 sentences. It also helps you avoid using an adjective when the sentence needs a word that describes the action itself. The final check is whether the completed answer says how, how often, or how strongly something happens.
