Adjective Formation Advanced Exercises

Advanced adjective formation asks you to build adjectives from base words such as verbs, nouns, or simpler adjectives. The answer must describe a noun or complete a phrase after a verb such as be, seem, or become. Common endings include -able, -ible, -ical, -ive, and -al. Some answers also need a negative prefix such as un-, in-, im-, or ir- when the sentence clearly means "not".

The main challenge is spelling. A final -e may disappear before a suffix, y may change to i, and some words have less predictable forms, such as practice becoming practical. Do not add a negative prefix just because one is possible; the meaning of the full sentence decides. These B2 questions prepare you to notice word class, adjective endings, and meaning at the same time, which is exactly what advanced word formation tasks require. Always reread the completed phrase to check that the adjective sounds natural before the noun or after the verb.
