General vs Specific Nouns: The or No Article
A2-B1 Level
Use no article, sometimes called the zero article, before plural and
uncountable nouns when you mean a whole category or an idea in general:
"Teenagers need sleep" and "Music helps people relax." Use "the"
when the listener can identify the particular people or thing you mean: "The teenagers
in my class are preparing a play" and "The music at the wedding was loud."
The noun itself does not decide the article; the intended meaning does. A plural noun such as "books" can be general in "Books can change your perspective" but specific in "The books that I borrowed are on the desk." An uncountable noun follows the same pattern: "Information is useful" means information generally, while "The information in your email was useful" identifies one particular set of information. Look for words that define the noun, including relative clauses, of-phrases and details about a place or source. This distinction is especially important for Spanish speakers because Spanish often uses a definite article when English uses no article for general meaning.
