Articles with Proper Nouns Exercises

A2-B1 Level

Proper nouns — names of specific places, people, and things — follow special article rules in English. Most countries, cities, and continents use no article: "France," "London," "Africa." However, countries with plural names or words like "Republic," "Kingdom," or "States" need "the": "the United States," "the United Kingdom," "the Netherlands." Rivers, seas, and oceans always use "the": "the Thames," "the Mediterranean," "the Atlantic Ocean."

Mountain ranges use "the" ("the Alps," "the Andes"), but individual mountains do not ("Mount Everest," "Mount Fuji"). Deserts and groups of islands also take "the": "the Sahara," "the Canary Islands." Hotels and theatres usually take "the" ("the Hilton," "the Globe Theatre"), while airports and stations often do not ("Heathrow Airport," "Victoria Station"). These rules cannot be worked out from logic alone — they must be learnt through practice and repetition. Articles with proper nouns are tested regularly in Cambridge B1 Preliminary and IELTS reading and writing sections.
