The vs Zero Article Exercises

A2 Level

In English, some nouns need "the" and others need no article at all — this is called the "zero article." Use "the" for things that are unique — there is only one: "the sun," "the moon," "the internet." Use "the" with musical instruments when someone plays them: "She plays the guitar." Use no article before meals ("I have breakfast at eight"), sports ("He plays tennis"), and languages ("I speak English").

The zero article is also used when talking about things in general: "Dogs are friendly" means all dogs, not specific ones. But when you mean particular ones, use "the": "The dogs next door are noisy." This general-versus-specific pattern is the key to choosing between "the" and no article. Many learners put "the" before every noun, but this sounds unnatural. If you mean all of something or something in general, leave out the article. If you mean a specific one that both people know about, use "the." This rule is tested frequently in Cambridge A2 and B1 examinations.

Quick Rule

the + unique / specific noun / musical instrument | no article + meals / sports / languages / general plural

  • 1.She plays the piano beautifully. (musical instrument — always "the")
  • 2.I have lunch at one o'clock every day. (meal — no article)
  • 3.We don't like football very much. (negative — sport with no article)
  • 4.The moon looks beautiful tonight. (unique — only one moon)
  • 5.She doesn't speak French at home. (negative — language with no article)
